Sigma DP0 Quattro Adventure Vol.III : The Eagle Has Landed … angle of view – 21mm is 21mm is 21mm

Coming home today I found a welcome surprise on my desk – the DP0 did already arrive :-).

Unpacked (wow … it’s big!) … firmware updated to the latest version. It is incomprehensible how you can deliver a camera with firmware 1.00 installed if 2.01 is the current version which packs important new functionality, DNG in 1st place and of course SFD.
So Sigma, you want to win new customers? Why not updating the firmware prior to sending out the cameras.

The first test shots I used to fight a myth – often you can read statements about wide angle on Micro Four Thirds cameras like this: “Due to the 4:3 format the angle of view of a 12mm mFT lens is not the same as a 24mm lens on a 35mm camera” … aha ;-).

Let’s proof the opposite – one picture is a GX80 product at approx. 10.5mm focal range (zoomed between 10 and 11, the camera still shows as 10mm).

The other picture is made with the DP0 – the origin of each picture should be easily noticeable due to the format – but only at its height

It can be seen that the angle of view is almost the same – the slight difference is by no means significant and might simply be due to not exactly hitting 10.5mm on the GX80.
